What are the Different Types of Marine Doors Available

by yuanda / Thursday, 04 January 2024 / Published in Latest News

There are various types of marine doors available that cater to different needs and requirements in the maritime industry. These doors are specially designed to withstand the harsh conditions at sea and ensure the safety and security of the ship’s crew and cargo. In this article, we will discuss the different types of marine doors and their uses.

  1. Watertight Doors: Watertight doors are designed to prevent water from entering a specific compartment of a ship, especially in case of flooding or a damaged hull. These doors are typically made of steel and have rubber gaskets to ensure a watertight seal when closed. Watertight doors are commonly used in areas such as engine rooms, pump rooms, and cargo holds.
  2. Weathertight Doors: Weathertight doors are designed to withstand harsh weather conditions at sea, including heavy rain, strong winds, and waves. These doors are mainly used in external areas of the ship, such as the bridge, deckhouse, and accommodations. Weathertight doors are typically made of steel or aluminum and have rubber gaskets to provide a weathertight seal.
  3. Fireproof Doors: Fireproof doors are specially designed to prevent the spread of fire within a ship. These doors are made of fire-resistant materials such as steel or composite materials and are capable of withstanding high temperatures. Fireproof doors are equipped with intumescent seals that expand when exposed to heat to provide an effective barrier against flames and smoke.
  4. Blast-Proof Doors: Blast-proof doors, also known as explosion-proof doors, are designed to withstand high-pressure blasts or explosions. These doors are commonly used in areas where flammable substances or explosive materials are stored, such as fuel tanks or ammunition compartments. Blast-proof doors are made of reinforced steel and have special locking mechanisms to ensure the door remains sealed during an explosion.
  5. Gastight Doors: Gastight doors are designed to prevent the leakage of gas or hazardous substances within a ship. These doors are commonly used in areas where toxic gases are present, such as chemical storage rooms or laboratories. Gastight doors are made of materials such as steel or aluminum, and they have specialized gaskets and seals to ensure a gastight seal.
  6. Sliding Doors: Sliding doors are commonly used in various areas of a ship, such as cabins, corridors, and storage spaces. These doors slide horizontally along a track, which allows for easy opening and closing without occupying extra space. Sliding doors can be designed to be watertight, weathertight, fireproof, or blast-proof, depending on the specific requirements.
  7. Revolving Doors: Revolving doors are mainly used in large ships or offshore structures where there is a significant flow of personnel and goods. These doors consist of several interconnected panels that rotate around a central axis, allowing for a continuous flow of people without the need for manual closing and opening of the door. Revolving doors can be designed to be weathertight or fireproof, depending on the specific requirements.
  8. Shell Doors: Shell doors are used to provide access to the shell plating or hull of a ship. These doors allow for easy access during maintenance or repairs. Shell doors are typically made of steel and can be watertight or weathertight, depending on their location on the ship.

The maritime industry requires various types of marine doors to meet the specific needs of different areas onboard a ship. Each type of door is designed to provide safety, security, and functionality in a specific environment and condition. These doors play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth and safe operation of ships in various maritime applications.
